National Donut Day became a recognized holiday in 1938 to honor members who served donuts to soldiers during WW1. Though as early as 1918 women traveled to France to set up huts & support the troops, they called themselves donut lassies. The ‘doughnut’ or ‘donut’ is an affordable easily shared treat. During war time & through the depression donuts were still made and shared among communities and over seas.
