Mighty-O wins 2009 Seattle Award

WASHINGTON D.C., June 8, 2009 — Mighty-O has been selected for the 2009 Seattle Award in the Retail Bakeries category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USCA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

Mighty-O’s Prizewinning Namesake

June 24th, 2009

We were quite surprised to get a phone call announcing that our name has been winning awards and championships lately! No, not for our baking or for our organic foods or sustainability. Our name has been winning dog shows! An adorable little Shih Tzu named Mighty-O after our donuts has earned a large collection of trophies. We’ll let her introduce herself:

“Hello… I’m miss MiGHTY O of Park Avenue. I’m a champion, especially here at home with Kaaren and Ron… My room is lined with blue ribbons- best in breed - best in show ribbons… it was with hugs and kisses that my parents Sharon and Ed Nye retired me from the show rings so I could have the luxury of dragging my New York purse around the house. Secret: my favorite is my baby sock with the hidden treasure: A SQUEAKER !!!”

We’re honored and flattered to have our name attached to such a beauty!!

Pet Adoptions at Mighty-O

June 9th, 2009

On Saturday, June 13, Mighty-O will host MaxMobile, the Seattle Humane Society’s mobile adoption unit. From 10am to 2pm, a great big yellow van full of cats, dogs, and critters who need new homes will be parked outside our store.

Most of us here at Mighty-O have pets, and a few of us have even adopted from the Humane Society. They do wonderful work, not only at finding new homes for pets but also providing continuing support for pet owners. They offer a wide range of training classes, services for low-income pet owners, microchipping, dog boarding, and other services for animals and their owners.

If you’re looking for a new companion in your life, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet some cats and dogs who are ready to love a new family!

History of National Doughnut Day

June 2nd, 2009

Mighty-O is gearing up for our celebration of National Doughnut Day on June 5!  We’ll be giving away free mini donuts in our shop all day.

National Doughnut Day isn’t just a silly holiday someone made up to have an excuse to eat donuts.  It actually has roots back in World War I.  The Salvation Army sent nurses to the front lines in France who not only took care of the physically sick, but also the homesick soldiers.  Part of their duty was to make the soldiers feel at home.  One of the ways they did this was by making and serving donuts for the soldiers.  They chose to serve donuts because they were considered a quintessentially American food.  These donuts were a great comfort to the soldiers, and the Salvation Army women who served them were soon known as “Doughnut Lassies.”

There is even a song in a 1918 songbook celebrating donuts’ role in WWI:

“A doughnut’s just a doughnut, boys, ’til you are “over there,”
And day and night you’re in a trench away in France somewhere;
You get a fresh-made doughnut, seems it comes from heaven above,
That doughnut, boys, reminds you of a slice of mother’s love.”

During the Great Depression, the Salvation Army was trying to help people on the homefront.  They again turned to donuts as a solution.  In 1938, the Chicago Salvation Army established National Doughnut Day as a fundraiser to help the needy.  Now, National Doughnut Day is a great way to celebrate an iconic American food.

For more information about the history of National Doughnut Day, see Paul R. Mullins, Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut (2008) and John T. Edge, Donuts: An American Passion (2006).
